Ac•Rock (Paul Iams)
Ac•Rock sings a cappella rock 'n roll. Performing everyone's rock favorites from the 50s through the 80s, Ac•Rock sings both the doo-wop standards audiences expect and more recent rock hits people might not expect to be performed a cappella. It's an engaging mix of tightly-crafted music and freewheeling humor that pleases audiences of all ages.
Over the last 20 years, Ac•Rock has sung for the Cubs, the White Sox and the Chicago Bulls. They've opened for Martin Short, Wayne Brady, the late Bernie Mac and Senator Al Franken. They've appeared on WGN Morning News, Channel 5 News, Wild Chicago and many radio stations. They have sung all over the United States and Canada and have performed hundreds of school shows.
Ac•Rock is Paul Iams (tenor), David Wilner (tenor), Chris Brown (baritone) and Mark MacLean (bass).
Ac•Rock has released six CDs, all available at www.acrock.com. Fan info available at www.facebook.com/acrockfans. Their iPhone app is free at the iTunes store.

B1 - The Logic of English: A New Way to See Words (Denise Eide)
Have you always believed English is illogical and inconsistent?
In this workshop your understanding of English will be transformed! Award winning author Denise Eide will reveal phonograms and spelling rules which explain 98% of English words. No longer will you need to tell your children, “that is an exception,” when they misread or misspell a word.
We will learn:- The rule which explains the two sounds for C in accent and describes more than 6,000 words!
- Three of the nine reasons for a Silent Final E.
- Why we drop the Silent Final E in servicing but not in serviceable, and much more!
- Why many math- and science-minded kids struggle with reading and spelling.
If you have always struggled with spelling or reading, or if you have children who struggle, do not miss this revolutionary workshop. You will leave wondering why someone didn’t tell you this in kindergarten.
-

Boys and girls are different. But did you know those differences affect their education? This workshop will cover the very real differences between boys’ brains and girls’ brains, the many ways a conventional one-size-fits-all education fails to meet the needs of boys and different techniques parents can use to facilitate their sons’ learning.
-
B4 - How Children Learn the Three Rs Without Formal Instruction (Peter Gray)
Children who grow up in a literate and numerate environment -- surrounded by people who read, write, and use numbers -- do not need to be taught the three Rs. They pick these skills up on their own. In this talk, based on reports from unschoolers and my own observations at the Sudbury Valley School, I will describe how children learn to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic operations without instruction. I will divide math learning into three functional categories: playful math (which might also be called "pure math"), instrumental math (math learned as a tool to solve problems encountered in daily life), and college admissions math (math learned to perform well on the SAT or ACT).
-
B5 - Planning and Achieving a Notebooking Approach to Homeschooling (Barbara Shukin)
Would you like to be encouraged and inspired to design your own curriculum? Let's demystify that process, and see how fun, creative, and educationally rigorous a notebooking approach can be. Topics include: how to develop a history spine and decide between a chronological or topical approach; notebooking your way through history, science, art and even math, the three essential ingredients in a well rounded curriculum; and encouragement to tailor content to suit your family's interests. Extensive book lists provided.
-
B6 - Make Learning Come Alive (Cindy Wiggers)
Kids love to get out of the books and DO something with what they are learning. How can you give them a deeper understanding of the peoples and places of the world as they study world history, geography, or science? Learn some simple techniques to integrate art projects, cooking, and nature studies using hands-on learning tools like notebooking, timelines, and outline maps. These types of activities provide valuable connections that improve student understanding and foster learning skills that will serve them for a lifetime!

C1 - Living the Dream (Nancy Sathre-Vogel)
People across the globe talk about walking away from it all in order to live their dream, but most never do it. The Vogel family from Boise, Idaho, did exactly that. In 2008, the family of four climbed aboard their bicycles in Alaska and started pedaling. It took them three long years to fulfill their dream of cycling the length of the Americas, but in March 2011 they arrived into Ushuaia, Argentina, at the southern tip of South America. Here is a video of their final day on the road.
In this workshop, Nancy (aka Mom) will present an overview of the family's experiences, including lessons learned on the road.

C3 - The Loving Father: The Why and How of Dads Telling Stories (Jim Weiss)
In an age in which children receive many competing, confusing messages, stories are among the greatest and longest-lasting gifts that a father can give his child. Long before Jim Weiss turned his passion for telling stories into a profession, he told stories to his own child. A generation before that, Jim and his brother listened to stories from their father and grandfather.
The results: a lifelong love of reading; an unquenchable thirst to learn; a passionate ability to listen; and a profound sense of passing along the central beliefs of those who came before us, in an entertaining, memorable form. In this timely session meant especially for dads, Jim will share his own experiences and demonstrate clear ways to transmit beliefs and credos, and to show our children how much we love them through the stories we share.

C4 - Meditation and Imagery for Parents (Deb Singleton)
Parents --especially homeschooling parents-- are constantly giving of themselves. But when we try to “pour out of an empty cup”, we find ourselves feeling exhausted, stressed, angry, and resentful. Meditation and imagery are terrific for replenishing ourselves so we are happier and more effective, loving parents. In a safe and confidential space, we will experience several meditation/imagery techniques and discuss the benefits they provide us for body, mind, and soul. Meditators often experience greater centeredness, inner peace, physical relaxation, self-understanding, and focus, as well as better sleep! We will also explore ways we can incorporate or facilitate these techniques with our children.

Orion has presented this lecture at over 60 schools, summer camps and churches and uses this philosophy in his work in area theatres as a fight director and the head of EDGE youth theatres.

D4 - The Surprising Evidence for New Thinking About Children (Melissa Bradford)
Praising a child causes under-performance and competition. An early morning start for a teen reduces achievement and increases depression. If a child argues with his parents, it's a good sign, not a bad one. Typical strategies to produce truthfulness result in making children better liars. Video games promote friendships and cooperation, not obesity and violence. Carrot-and-stick approaches are exactly the wrong way to motivate people. Vulnerability to peer pressure is a good thing in the long run. Enormous IQ gains in young children can result from an unexpected intervention: free play. Hear about surprising new research in psychology that directly challenges many modern parenting and education practices.

D5 - Successful College Portfolios From Unschooled Students (Alison McKee)
For parents of unschoolers, the thought of trying to help their unschooler get into college without traditional documentation, academics, standardized testing, a high-school diploma, or a GED can seem like a lost cause. Join Alison McKee as she illustrates “how to,” based upon real-life success stories. Unschoolers are successfully getting into college without traditional credentials. Most qualify for college scholarships and financial aid. How does this happen? Learn about the process at this session.

D6 - A Countercultural Approach to Socialization (Marlene Molewyk)
Do you secretly worry about your child having enough friends? Do you fret about your child fitting in with others? If so, you're not alone! These fears are common to homeschoolers, and they can cause periodic fits of panic that leave us secretly wondering if we're damaging our kids for life. In this workshop, socially stressed out parents are encouraged to examine socialization through a new set of lenses. We'll first discuss the belief system undergirding the accepted socialization process, which many homeschoolers unknowingly buy into. Next, we'll examine the negative long-term outcomes of the accepted socialization process, which can affect our homeschooled children, if we're not careful. I'll then present a countercultural approach to socialization that focuses on helping our children develop specific character traits, communication skills, and conflict management skills within individual relationships, with the long-term goal of developing deep, meaningful relationships in adulthood—the type of relationship that many "properly socialized" adults crave, yet have difficulty developing.

Join Dustin (and the gang) from Tinkering School Chicago as we improvise a ball run/Rube Goldberg machine. We will bring lots of interesting materials, you bring your imagination (and some perseverance)!
Our goal is to teach kids to play in the face of adversity. We aim to change not only how they solve problems, but how they see problems. To stop seeing the world as mysterious and unknowable. To know you can do great things just by messing around. To not give up when things seem too hard. At Tinkering School, failure meets celebration because it means you are doing something! It means you are creating instead of sitting, thinking instead of accepting, testing the limits of what you know instead of quietly waiting to be told what to do.
This session is part of a three-session workshop. Sign up for one or more sessions. Drop-in's are welcome as space permits.

"I know that I know nothing."
A "Socrates Cafe" is a gathering of unique people that come together and discuss philosophical ideas using the Socratic Method. The Socratic Method is a form of inquiry and debate between individuals with opposing viewpoints based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to illuminate ideas. Consensus is not expected and agreement is not necessary. People get together and have a conversation to discover what they think and what others think, whether they all agree or not. They leave knowing that it's okay to disagree. A Socrates Cafe can help you learn how to think, not what to think. In this workshop, we will discuss some issues and learn ways to start and facilitate a Socrates Cafe in our own neigborhood or community.

It's a wicked-fast, fun, safe, supervised battle with swords, wearing masks, jackets, and gloves. Come learn the art of fencing. Coach Gandy is the Sabre coach at Stevenson High School and Bullen, Washington, and Lincoln Middle Schools. Girls and boys can learn to fence and play on a even field. Fencing has a high number of active geeks who become very good fighters. Come feel the force, learn what the zone is, feel what the other fencer is thinking and beat him before he moves. F22 - Creating a Choir in a Homeschool Environment - Family Presentation (Paul A. Laprade)
Choral singing is one of the most inexpensive, efficient, and fulfilling means for engaging students in group music study. One of the challenges for the homeschool teacher is in identifying proven processes for successfully developing a choral experience ‘from scratch’. Members of ElysianVoices, a professional choir, demonstrate the steps by which a group of singers can reliably develop their musical skills and choral ability. A process to developing a choir is offered, as well as examples of literature which could be used to teach through choral music.

F24 - Games - Free Board Gaming - Family Workshop (Ron Behm)
Come to one (or more!) of our four Games workshops to learn a new game or to play an old favorite. There will be many games to choose from including Uno, Candyland, Yahtzee, Pictionary, and Apples to Apples. Each session will also highlight a game or two to be taught by the presenter.
In this session we will briefly discuss the idea of Free Board Games; strategy games that can be played with items (dice, poker chips, etc.) you may have around the house and rules that can be taught in minutes. However, the discussion will be short to give attendees time to play two such games. Breakthrough is a simple but addictive two-player game played on a regular checkerboard. We will also introduce Unlur, an abstract strategy game where each player has a different winning objective. Attendees will leave with the rules and boards of both games.

This course blends the experience of the Exhibit Hall and the workshop rooms. Our agents will pick up their assignments in the Exhibit Hall. They will be part of a Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, James Bond or Jason Bourne Scenario. The scenarios will be based on the plot of a specific book from the series. Throughout Friday, agents will need to check in and get their assignments, gear and rules. Agents playing the game will wear colored ribbons on their arms to indicate they are active players, color-coded per story line. Participants will be heavily encouraged to read the book that goes along with their plot line. Missions will consist of scavenger-type hunts, planting a “bug” (clothes pin) on another agent, neutralizing other agents (clothes pin again), surveillance (camera phones and digital cameras) and clue collecting. Saturday morning, we will tally the results and announce the scores for the agencies. Then in Saturday’s workshop, we will infiltrate a common counter-agency’s headquarters and retrieve secret data under enemy fire! One final key of the book's mystery will await back at the EDGE table! Puzzle solving, investigation, and sweet Nerf action.

G1 - The Decline of Play and the Rise of Psychopathology in Children and Adolescents (Peter Gray)
Over the past half-century, in the United States and other developed nations, children’s free play with other children has declined sharply. Over the same period, anxiety, depression, suicide, feelings of helplessness, and narcissism have increased sharply in children, adolescents, and young adults. In this talk, I will document these historical changes and contend that the decline in play has contributed to the rise in young people’s psychopathology. Play appears to be a major means by which children (a) develop intrinsic interests and competencies; (b) learn how to make decisions, solve problems, exert self-control, and follow rules; (c) learn to regulate their emotions; (d) make friends and learn to get along with others as equals; and (e) experience joy. Through all of these effects, play promotes mental health.

G3 - Top Ten Things I Wish I Had Known When I Started Homeschooling (Kathy Wentz)
As an educational consultant I hear (and give practical answers to) many of the same questions over and over: How do I homeschool within the law? What about socialization? What curriculum is best? What does my child need to learn at each grade level? What about testing? My child has special needs; can I still homeschool him/her? How can I get a lot of resources for only a little money? I don't have a college degree, so how can I homeschool high school? What does my child need to graduate high school? What about college? If you would like answers to these questions (and more!), this is the workshop for you!

G4 - Finding the Right Structure for Our Homeschooling (Alison McKee)
Every family deals with issues of structuring a lifestyle that is right for them. In homeschooled families, such issues may become a bit more complicated because educational responsibility for the children is the entire responsibility of the parents involved. In this session we will address this unique situation by exploring such questions as: How much structure is necessary? Can children really learn “all they need to know” if they are left to make their own educational choices? How do we find the “right” place on the continuum of structure for our family?

H1 - Doing the Extraordinary: Breaking Big Things into Manageable Chunks (Nancy Sathre-Vogel)
What would YOU do if you weren't afraid? If you weren't afraid of failure or getting hurt or financial ruin, what would you do?
Anybody can live their dream; ordinary people can (and do) do the extraordinary all the time - it's just a matter of breaking it down into manageable chunks. You can tackle outrageous goals by taking it one itty-bitty step at a time.
This workshop will focus on the importance of setting goals and managing them in such a way that doesn't overwhelm us. We'll also talk about teamwork and how we need to utilize our strengths and allow others to use theirs.
-
H2 - Deschooling Ourselves (Dorothy Werner)
I don't want to do school at home. I homeschool because I don't want that old stuff. How do I keep from acting or reacting the way my teachers and parents did? Come to this workshop. We will work on it.
-
H3 - Homeschooling for Cheapskates (Kathy Wentz)
Homeschooling doesn't need to be expensive. In fact, many of us find that homeschooling is virtually free! Join us for a discussion about how to homeschool by using materials and resources available for free on the Internet and your smartphone (or tablet), at the library, and in your community. An extensive resource packet is provided to attendees, but be sure to bring a pencil to add to it!

H4 - The Home Stretch? Or Just the Beginning? - Panel Discussion (Ellen Stukel)

Need to know how to graduate your child from high school? What about the college application process? Come to a panel discussion where we will talk about the different options for meeting your goals for high school and post-secondary education. Teens are welcome. Charlene Doland, Barbara Shukin, Ellen Stukel

H5 - How to Unschool the College Years (Blake Boles)
How can you give yourself a higher education without going to college? I've thought long and hard about this question, and I ran an entire Unschool Adventures trip designed to tackle this problem. In this workshop I'll share the tools and insights I've gathered from creating Zero Tuition College. Teens considering college, teens currently in college, and curious parents are all invited to join.

H6 - The Unified Approach to Tying Teaching Together (Cindy Wiggers)
Want to teach your child how to think and learn? The unified approach is your ticket! Show your child the connections between all areas of learning, paving the way for lifelong learning. Come to hear how you can increase efficiency, enjoyment, and interest in your homeschooling life.

H7 - When a Triceratops Invites a T-Rex for Dinner (Meal Planning for Families with Vegisauruses and Carnivores) (Mary Leung)
Do you have a vegetarian child, and a spouse who thinks a meal is not complete without meat? Maybe you are all omnivores, but chances are you or your kids have vegetarian or vegan friends you’d like to invite to your home. Planning meals for families with both herbivores and carnivores can be a challenge, but it can also be an opportunity to have the whole family eat more healthfully and expand your culinary repertoires and palettes. Join us for tips, tricks and recipes to help feed your mixed-diet families. If you have any, please bring along recipes to swap that make your whole family happy at meal time. Jim, a T-Rex, and Mary, a Triceratops, have been cooking and eating together for many years and feeding their kids, one herbivore and one carnivore, for more than 12 of those years.

Our presentation is largely driven by audience questions, but we make an effort to discuss the natural history and habitat requirements of each of the species presented, at a level appropriate for the audience. H39 - Sabre Fencing: The Art of the Sword! (Coach Gandy) FULL
Learn the Olympic sport of Sabre fencing: sword-fighting like Zorro, Robin Hood, or the Pirate Capt. Jack.
(My high school girls Sabre team can beat my boys Sabre team!) Sword-fighting is for any red-blooded, high-energy, running-your-legs-off kid. This is also the sport for the kid who seems alone playing with games: the computer geek. This is a thinking sport where chess is played with a blade. Fencing has a high number of active geeks who become very good fighters. Come feel the force, learn what the zone is, feel what the other fencer is thinking and beat him before he moves. This is where Star Wars got the talk. Sometimes you can see the move before he tries to do it, and wait to beat the attack when it comes. A person's inner being can be seen when they fence; you can talk without words, beat, parry, lunge, counter parry and repost. Come join us! We are storming the castle!!! Please come dressed in a t-shirt, sweat pants and gym shoes. Jeans can get ripped easily in fencing. Special needs kids can attend workshop with a chaperone.
